Ukemi: The Art of Falling is a fall prevention and gait training program with the goal of preventing and minimizing injuries associated with falling. Proficiency in falling is achieved by learning techniques in four basic categories: breathing techniques to help with dizziness and minimize the chances of pneumonia after a fall; balance techniques to help with lowering and standing up from the floor; strengthening techniques focused on wrists, ankles, elbows and knees; and ultimately 40 basic falling techniques based on the most valuable principals of falling found in Judo, Aikido, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ). Special attention is paid to moving with a proper gait during the practice of Ukemi. The study of Namba Aruki (Namba walking) and Shikko (Samerai Walking) help practitioners develop an efficient and balanced gait.
