Ukemi: The Art of Falling is a fall prevention and gait training program designed to prevent and minimize injuries associated with falling. Mastery of Ukemi techniques is achieved by learning methods in four fundamental categories: breathing techniques to alleviate dizziness and reduce the risk of pneumonia after a fall; balance techniques to assist with lowering to and rising from the floor; strengthening techniques targeting the wrists, ankles, elbows, and knees; and ultimately 40 essential falling techniques based on the key principles of falling derived from Judo, Aikido, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ). Special emphasis is placed on maintaining a proper gait during the practice of Ukemi, with the study of Namba Aruki (Namba walking) and Shikko (Samurai Walking) helping practitioners develop an efficient and balanced gait.
